Just before Christmas 2002, the Friends published 200 copies of Leland
Snowman’s second booklet of reminiscences titled Life As It Was In Newagen.
This fifty-page booklet tells of his childhood circa 1918 and ice skating on
Cape
Pond
when it
was fresh water before some of the dam was removed for stones to build the last
cottage on
Bayberry Lane
. There is
also an interesting description of the Fire Department’s trip to the Copley
Plaza Hotel in Boston, then managed by Arthur Race of East Boothbay.
The book is for sale for $10 at the Memorial Library and at Sweet Dreams
Bakery and at the Museum whenever they are open. The book can be ordered by mail
for $13 from Donald Duncan,
32 Blair
Road
,
Southport
,

.
The Southport Historical Society published the Old House Book
in 1988, which documented seventy houses built prior to 1900. Jean Hawley and
others are trying to gather data on all houses on the
Island
including
seasonal cottages. You will find below a questionnaire, which will give you a
chance to provide more information on any house with which you are acquainted.
Please return the questionnaire to Jean at the address indicated on the form.
